Both can be run at the same time although there is some overlap.
Both approaches have their pros and cons. Installing SNMP Informant on all systems to be monitored can be awkward, and the free version limits what values can be returned. Using WMI can be problematic due to Windows security issues, particularly cross domain, and doesn't seem to work for NT4 systems.
