Ok, I may have answered this question for myself. I ran a zenbackup on the old vmware appliance.
Moved the backup file over to the new appliance. ran a zenrestore on the new vmware appliance. started zenoss (at which time several of the daemons failed to start) ran a zenmigrate then started all the zenoss daemons again.
