I did it by creating a share on the host machine and then doing a CIFS mount 
within the VM image to the share.    You should be able to create a windows 
share on any machine that is reachable by the VMware machine.

I don't know if that is the correct way to do it, as I am also inexperienced 
with Linux, but hey, it worked.

As far as using another Windows workstation, I use the freebie Putty secure 
shell terminal program to attach to the VMware machine.  Again, any machine 
that can 'see' the VMware installations' ssh port will work.
