Hopefully you've already found a solution, but I just ran into this problem and
figured I'd share what I found:

I went into Settings to change From Address for Emails to zenoss and clicked
save. After doing that I got a bunch of AUTH errors like you saw and no emails
were getting sent. Since things were working before, my first guess was to undo
what I just did, but that didn't help.

After poking around a bit in the manual, I realized I didn't know where the
admin and password for SMTP Username and SMTP Password came from, and both have
(blank for none) next to them. So I cleared both those fields and saved, and
wouldn't you know they got filled out again. But, even though the fields were
filled out with the same values, that fixed things on my end and the emails
started flowing.

So in my instance, I think those 2 fields were saved in the configuration as
blank, but Zenoss (2.0 at least) fills them out with default values in the
webapp. When I saved my changes, the bogus values in the webapp got saved in
the configuration and tried to use AUTH to log in with that username and
password. Setting those back to blank and saving fixed the configs.
