I have seen errors where the servers have been running older versions of net-snmp. In some places the snmpd daemon stops answering and needs to be restarted. Zenoss reports this as "snmp agent down on device HOSTNAME"
Upgrading my RHEL hosts from net-snmp v5.0 to net-snmp v5.3 or newer has helped.
