I said screw it and did my own install.  CentOS + rpm is actually pretty simple 
to setup, and it's a crapload easier to configure the system how you want it.  
The vm app is definitely nice to test it out and see if it fits your needs, but 
it's probably a better idea to setup your own system how you want for 
production... (it can still be within a VM :) ).  From what I remember when I 
was fighting this, several important libs for this (sasl, openldap, etc) that 
were installed in the vm app were too outdated for the ldap multi plugin or 
python-ldap... one of them :P
