You can do many kind of tricks to fix error... I

For me? no help... 

If it would be even (my)sql db corruption, it would be much easier to fix, but 
it's zodb bug/corruption... it can be found from zodb issue tracker also, but 
if i remember correctly, the "resolution" found there was "problem disappeared 
by itself, life is good" type of fix :D

ehm, another annoying thingie is that in my installation it's impossible to 
remove smtp username and password for some reason... 
Some other guy in the forums had also this same quite annoying feature ;)
You can get them "not to work" (meaning that zenoss doesn't try to auth smtp), 
but the values stays in the settings tab... 
I just thought that could this be this "zodb corruption point"...
