Hmm, there is the admin guide, and the Zenoss book . . . Searching the
forums would show you lots of posts. . .
Really, this isn't software that you just install and it works - kind of
like the difference between plunking down an X-Box or a Windows Gaming
PC... If you want the "X-Box", you'll need to do a few things.
1. Figure out what "games" you actually want. That is, what do you want
to get out of this? What servers, what switches, routers, wireless
access points etc. What info did you want to monitor? Uptime? Response
time? Traffic volume? Service status? What laptop just associated with
the access point?
2. Buy some help. Zenoss Inc can come in, set up the appliance ("X-Box")
configure it and get you going. That will cost a bit however. There are
also third party companies that could come in and set it up.
If you want the cheap route with core (no paying), then you're going to
pay in time and learning. You'll probably spend 6 months getting it
going (I did anyway), you'll screw up a bit, and get somewhat frustrated
till you get to understand SNMP, Zenoss, Linux and more.
There are guides on the Wiki on how to install Zenoss core for your
platform. If you aren't already set with a specific platform, use CentOS
5.x. You will save a lot of headaches. Then if you're not very
experienced with Linux *and* don't need SSL monitoring, use the stack
installer. You will need to learn about Linux, and you should plan on
going to the various support providers for Linux issues (i.e. not here).
There is not going to be a guide on setting it up how you want it. No
one knows how you want it. So sit back, think about what *specifically*
you want to do, search these forums for threads about what you want to
do, look in the admin guide, Zenoss book, wikis and google for what you
want to do. You'll often find multiple ways of doing what you want to
do, so spend some time evaluating which one will work best. If you don't
find *anything* about what you are trying to do, then post here and
maybe someone will know.
Finally, I'm seeing a bunch of these "I'm a newbe and don't know what to
do. Can someone give me a HOWTO?" posts. Please, please read:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
I don't mean to be flamey, or to discourage new users, but this question
is almost impossible to actually help via a mailing list. I do hope
these pointers assist.

Hello,
I am very new to this sort of thing and am having a lot of troubles setting up
zenoss core. Is there a step by step guide of some kind on how to set it up
monitoring servers and having reports etc?
Any help would be appreciated as i am really stuck.
Thanks in advance
