Replying to pregan:
Zenoss Inc has been told LOUD and CLEAR that their documentation is lacking. They are addressing this. Matt Ray and others have posted what steps they are taking. I expect they will have new documentation in place with FAQs and better wiki's etc by Octoberish... 2.3 sprints I hope.

Right now there is the wiki and these forums. I've found help by searching them, and by posting. IRC can also be useful.

As you've found out, getting monitoring going can be like getting Active Directory going. It's not a plunk it down and everything works for you. Same thing here, though the Zenpacks help a lot (and more are being made all the time). You still need to know what you want to know, and no one can really make an event severity/alerting scheme for you. Well, you could pay Zenoss Inc to come in and set up the appliance for you.

Hello ..

I also just learning this app, and on a seriously steep learning curve. the
admin guide has enough basic information to get you going. Docs link on the
main menu.

Then you will spend days on the forum trying to load mibs, model devices etc ..

I'm looking at the core version to see if this can replace a mixture of current
NMS tools we use. medium size network 100 ish routers and switches, 50-60
servers etc .. Right now I dont think the time and effort needed to get this
running is enough reward for the company .... even with the enterprise upgrade.
