It appears (don't have an AIX box around to test with, sorry :( ) that there's an APAR for this issue:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg1IZ05439 There are fixes for AIX 5.3 TL6 and AIX 6.1 as well. You may want to try applying this patch first and then see if you still get odd results.
