ok so you do a 

$ZENHOME/bin/zopectl status and it says its not running, and after starting it 
stops right away...  you can try this:

$ZENHOME/bin/zopectl foreground

That will launch a temporary zope gig and splurt the info, debug, and error 
messages to your console.

If that looks good then perhaps you have an issue with your network settings 
where 8080 is blocked or something else weird like that.  If zope is running 
you can use utilities like netstat and lsof to determine whether or not 
anything is listening on 8080 (or whatever your defined zope port is)
