Yes that helps quite a bit. Thanks! It looks like I want to:
1)Write my own modeling plugin specific to the devices I'm interested in 2)Poll the device for some data, it doesn't really matter what it is, just so I can make a threshold it will always cross to trigger an event. 3)Have and event command that runs a script, that tells zenoss to trigger a remodeling of the device, and moves the event to the history. I'm fairly proficient with python, doing mostly work with databases and xml-rpc, so I think I can do this.
