i think zenoss is actually simpler to install, provided you can do one of the stack installers. even if you dont use the stack installer, the source install isnt that bad either, and mostly involves fixing os related compile issues. if you just want to poke around the vmware appliance is a nice start. as far as functionality and stability, zenoss can do what nagios does, but nagios has been around for a bit longer, so there is a bit more debugging that has gone into it. thats not to say zenoss is buggy... i am not trying to sway you either way, just suggesting you try the appliance.
