I had a similar problem to yours. What was suggested to me was to use a 
"Nagios-style" plugin.

Basically if you can script the test you want so that it returns a set of 
item=value pairs, you can create a graph that plots the values. The 
instructions for that, once you have a working Nagios style plugin, are located

What constitutes a working plugin? If you look at the first example in the 
above link you'll see a line that looks like:
