Good Day, A while back I spoke with the developers on IRC #zenoss about the performance degradation when you have zenoss acting as a syslog server for your network or Zenoss running on the same machine your loghost resides in.
Whilst investigating these aforementioned issues, I realized the extra noise syslog and syslog-ng generate while receiving remote logs from local servers/desktop machines in attempting to reverse lookup the IP addys. I fired up tcpdump and got the following: http://www.dalan.us/download/net In addition to the hundreds perhaps thousands of logs being received by the host log/zenoss server, reverse dns lookups are generating more unnecessary traffic. If you look at the man page for syslogd(8): -x Disable name lookups when receiving remote messages. This avoids deadlocks when the nameserver is running on the same machine that runs the syslog daemon. How do we enable or disable the name lookups in Zensyslog? p.s. I have more info to add later. Anyone else have information to add for the performance degradation? -------------------- m2f -------------------- Read this topic online here: http://forums.zenoss.com/viewtopic.php?p=29004#29004 -------------------- m2f -------------------- _______________________________________________ zenoss-users mailing list [email protected] http://lists.zenoss.org/mailman/listinfo/zenoss-users
