You can use SNMP v3 for monitoring and still handle v2 or v1 traps. The docs are being fixed to remove the "2.1.1" reference and simply state that "SNMP v3 traps are not currently supported". They have not been added to 2.3.3 or to the upcoming 2.4 release.
