ZenOSS offers no agent which would be capable of the client -> server checki-n that you mention. The ZenOSS server can monitor and model nodes via SNMP, SSH or WMI. You would need to do these over an IP network -- be it public internet (obviously, the least favored) or a VPN tunnel connecting the two networks.
