The Zenoss appliances run rPath Linux and do not have much enabled beyond simply running Zenoss. The purpose of the appliance is to provide "just enough operating system" to run the app. You may want to read up on using 'conary', the rPath package manager. http://wiki.rpath.com/wiki/Main_Page You may have an easier time installing a more familiar Linux on a VM and putting Zenoss on that VM, but feel free to dig into rPath.
