I've submitted a ticket for this issue and included a link to this thread.
I did a little more digging around and found that after I got a "Command timed out" event, I issued the check_http command via command line and got HTTP OK, but this doesn't appear in Event History like it used to in 2.3.3 and the event is not cleared.
