I double checked it again, in both the device class's zproperties and the 
device itself.  These are the settings I have for snmp:

zSnmpAuthPassword blank
zSnmpAuthType blank
zSnmpCommunities public private (they are on separate lines in the text area)
zSnmpCommunity public
zSnmpMonitorIgnore False
zSnmpPort 161
zSnmpPrivPassword blank
zSnmpPrivType blank
zSnmpSecurityName blank
zSnmpTimeout 2.5
zSnmpTries 2
zSnmpVer v2c


I just tried adding another linux machine into the same class and it sais the 
same thing about SNMP monitoring off for <HOSTNAME>.
