I have no idea if/what codes changes were made since 2.2.3... but in every 
version I've used (2.2.4 & up), the device name is determined by DNS lookup of 
the IP.  If unable to resolve, device name = IP.  

You will have to manually change the name via Manage --> Rename Device.  
This can also be accomplished via XML-RPC with the function "renameDevice".
