I have just committed changes to the Java binding that make it aware of 0MQ's version (both at compile and run time). It should be possible now to build and use the maint (2.0.10) and master (2.1.0) branches for the binding with no problems. The maint branch will return runt-time errors when using socket options not supported back then.
