The order of the results is usually configurable within the system. Although this appears to be emphasized by a defect with Ubuntu 10.10.
Development is planned for the next release to treat a node name as a list of potential addresses instead of just one and at the final stage of address resolution vet the list for interfaces that are active and multicast enabled. Workaround is always to specify the desired interface by name or address. -- Steve-o
