Thanks for the reply Pieter, that helped a lot: For anyone interested there's now a ZPL package for Go documented at http://godoc.org/github.com/jtacoma/gozpl. While the API is pretty stable and emulates that of encoding packages in the Go standard library, it's not yet thoroughly-tested.
