http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1040261.cms Power surcharge for ST/SCs waived TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ THURSDAY, MARCH 03, 2005 11:46:56 PM ] HYDERABAD: The government has announced waiver of Rs 22 crore of power surcharge dues from scheduled caste and schedule tribe consumers for the period ending December last. But the dues amounting to Rs 180 crore for the actual tariff would be collected over the next two years in equated monthly installments. This was announced in the state Assembly through a statement read out by finance minister K Rosaiah. The decision would benefit 17.67 lakh SC/ST consumers. While stating that the distribution companies (Discoms) would be reimbursed the waived amount, Rosaiah made it clear that the surcharge waiver was being allowed only to facilitate the payment of actual tariff dues. The Discoms would have to collect the dues regularly. Consumers too would have to pay their bills regularly from January this year along with the arrears due from them. The minister said the TDP government had only kept the collection of dues in abeyance in view of the drought conditions prevailing in the state. It had directed A P Transco in November 2003 to reconnect all domestic connections in SC and ST colonies and tribal hamlets. "Reconnections were ordered with the condition that the bills would have to be paid regularly from then on," the statement said. The government said it received several representations from domestic consumers of SC and ST habitations to waive all kinds of dues and restore power supply to the disconnected houses.
