DPI leader's plea to Governor on VCs

DPI general secretary Thol Thirumavalavan today urged the Governor
Surjit Singh Barnala to nominate Vice-Chancellors from SC/ST communities for a
few universities in the State in which the post would fall vacant soon.
Talking to reporters here after presenting a memorandum to the
Governor, Thirumavalavan said there were around 20 universities in the State
and only one person from SC/ST communities occupied the post of
Vice-Chancellor.
In this regard, he pointed out that the post of vice-chancellor would
be falling vacant in three varsities - Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Tirunelveli,
Tamil University, Thanjavur and Anna University - and appealed to the Governor
to ensure that a person from SC/ST category is appointed to the post.
The DPI leader in his plea said in Tamilnadu there were more than 20
universities and as per the reservation policy, 19 per cent are to be reserved
for SC/STs in the State. Also, he noted that there is no single person from the
SC/ST category in the search committees which are formed for the selection of
Vice-Chancellors.
