BANGALORE: Eminent scholars have commended the State Governments proposal to introduce English from Class I in Kannada schools. But, they also said that it was necessary to have certain mechanisms in place before English is introduced.

BANGALORE: Eminent scholars have commended the State Governments proposal to introduce English from Class I in Kannada schools. But, they also said that it was necessary to have certain mechanisms in place before English is introduced.
In an open debate on the implications of introducing English in rural schools, experts said that it would enable more rural candidates to secure better jobs in cities.
Swamiji Veerabhadra Chandamala, addressing the Karnataka Joint Action Committee for Backward Castes, Dalits and Minorities, said that Kannada would not be threatened by the entry of English.
The economy is growing and most businesses have global communication technologies. Therefore it becomes imperative to learn English to communicate well. The Kannada-speaking masses have been left behind in this economic race. Therefore it is necessary for rural students to learn English from class I. But the situation at the moment favours private school children, as they are the ones who go on to secure better jobs, he said.
