K R Narayanan, one of the dalit icons is dead. May his soul rest in peace. Dalit's interests would have been served great had he walked in the path of Babasaheb with his great intellectual capacity. But unfortunately, he was co-opted by Congress and company and could not do much his fellow dalits that he would have done otherwise. But, his years in the office of President were exemplary. He brought dignity to the post by not being acted as a rubber stamp. I am saddened by his death. Benjamin

Narayanan sir , ex.President, Republic of India passed away!!! My experience with him!!! Dear Members, Jai Bhim, It is very sad news that our first Dalit President Mr. K. R. Narayanan sir has passed away. He was standing in between Devils of Parliaments and people during his tenure as President. He was the first President who used his offices with Constitutional Powers for people. He asked then BJP Government to send second list of Supreme Courts judges with SC/ST judges name included. Because of this our men were Supreme Court judges. He took our cause whenever he got chance. My personal communication with him has occurred in 1997 after he assumed his office. I will narrate whole episode for benefit of all members. I qualified GATE 97 examination in 1997 at my final year of BE (Mech.Engg.). I appeared for personal interviews at IIT Bombay for my MTech admission. I appeared for written test of Aerospace Engg and subsequently personal interviews of Aerospace and Mechanical Engg. My general rank was 16th for written exam out of total of around 50 students. Still I could not get selected in Aerospace department. Whereas my one classmate of general category secured 39th rank still he got selected. After appearing Aerospace interview I went at 6pm to Mechanical Engg department for my interview. As I was last person they took my interview in hurry. Interview lasted for 3min only. This was clear injustice for me as they were never interested in my candidature. Also they did not put list of SC/ST student selected. We were not able to know whether reservation quota was filled or not. We enquired at PG office about this, fortunately one employee was our man. He informed us that seats remain vacant if SC/ST students are not found suitable. Interview process was clear injustice for me. Due to lack of proper guidance I could not apply to other IITs and IISc, Bangalore. So I lost my one year though I was having valid GATE score with BE (Mech.Engg) degree. After that I met Mr.Satish Gavai, IAS. That time he was Director, Department of Social Welfare, Govt. of Maharashtra, Pune. My elder brother Anand and I could convince him to take our matter. He wrote letter to IIT Bombay asking number of SC/ST seats filled. As expected he could not receive any response from IIT Bombay. So we wrote letter to Mr.S.R.Bommai, then Minister HRD, Govt. of India. After one month we could not get any response from him also. So we wrote letter to Mr. K.R. Narayanan sir, then President, Republic of India. To our surprise we got first letter within 20 days from Presidents office under signed by Personal Secretary of President informing us that the matter is under consideration. After this letter we received one letter from Personal Secretary of Minister HRD stating that we are looking into the matter. We got second letter from President after one month instructing us to meet Chief Secretary, Govt. of Maharashtra for further process. We did not meet him as I already lost my one academic year. Before 1998 years admission process we went to IIT Bombay to meet Prof.Ramchandran Rao who was Dean (Academic). He realized after some period that something was wrong in admission process. When we met him he informed us that he was sacked from Dean (Academic) post and for next year onwards there would not be any interview for SC/ST students for MTech admissions. Thus from 1998 onwards in IIT Bombay SC/ST students are getting direct admission without interview filling reserved quota. This happened because of Mr. K.R.Narayanan sir only. He took this matter personally and changed the system in our favour. In 1998 at first place I got admission at IISc,Bangalore and I joined there. I thought to share with you my experience with Mr.K.R. Narayanan sir who was always helpful for us with his best capacity. Hope members will get inspiration from Mr.K.R. Narayanan sirs life for working towards downtrodden people. Yours, Prashant V. Bhosale, Research Scholar (Mech.Engg.) IIT Delhi. 9868458550. Glory to those who would reap their struggle for the liberation of the enslaved in spite of heavy odds, carping humiliation, storms and dangers till the downtrodden secure their Human Rights. - Babasaheb Dr. B.R.
