Cabinet clears quota for SC/ST in private educational instns

Students belonging to the backward classes and SCs and STs are likely to get back their right to reservation by the new academic session 2006-2007.
The Cabinet today approved a Constitution Amendment Bill to provide for reservation for backward classes and SCs and STs in the matter of admission to educational institutions, particularly private unaided institutions, other than minority institutions.
The Cabinet Committee on WTO approved India's negotiating strategy giving adequate manoeuvering space to Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath but asking him to protect interest of the country's 650 million farmers at the crucial Hong Kong Ministerial Meeting of the WTO beginning next week from December 13.
Mr Kamal Nath would be leaving tonight for the ASEAN Economic Summit - India Consultation in Kaula Lumpur from where he would head for Hong Kong.
The Government also gave its approval to amend the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Co-operation between India and ASEAN through a protocol, which would prescribe a framework for a Free Trade Area with that Regional Block.
Briefing newspersons on the outcome of the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said the amendment would reflect the state of negotiations and would prescribe new timeframes for the conclusion of the negotiations and the implementation of the ASEAN - India Free Trade Area.
