Pudiya Tamizhagam to contest in 150 seats

TIRUCHY: The Pudiya Tamizhagam (PT) party will contest in 150 seats in the ensuing Assembly elections, said party president Dr K Krishnasamy. Speaking to reporters, he said the party’s general body meeting held here on Sunday resolved to contest in as many as 150 seats.
Started as an organisation to protect the interests of Dalits, Pudiya Tamizhagam had grown as a ‘big’ party today which had contested polls in 1996, 1998 and 1999 to the Assembly and Parliament respectively and bagged sizable votes.
Though in 2001, the PT joined hands with the DMK front, the latter ignored it in the 2004 parliamentary polls.
However, the PT would continue to strive hard to uplift the downtrodden and rise up and hence, it had decided to contest in 150 seats in Tamil Nadu, the resolution said.
When asked whether the PT would join with any particular Dravidian party, he preferred not to comment at this juncture, but elaborated that the Pudiya Tamizhagam would keep its options open.
All that he would say was ‘‘Whoever supported and protected the Dalits and their interests, we would like to be with them.’’
When a scribe asked to comment on the performance of the AIADMK Government, Krishnasamy refused to comment, but said, ‘‘It is election time.’’
When asked whether he would consolidate various Dalit outfits, he replied that Pudiya Tamizhagam was the only Dalit outfit in Tamil Nadu.
