    PM asks Plan panel to change SC/ST policy
New Delhi, Feb 21  Ahead of Assembly elections in five states, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asked the Planning Commission to initiate strategic changes in the existing policy pertaining to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. 

The Centre is also considering to adopt the Maharastra model as an effective means for implementation of Dalit welfare programmes. The commission has been asked by the Prime Minister to prepare a 10-year vision document for the development of SCs and STs. The document will form the base for chalking out welfare programmes for SCs and STs in the 11th Five-Year Plan.
