Dalits' stir for temple land

Ongole, June 6: Dalits of Tumadu village in Jarugumalli Mandal of Prakasam district continued their agitation for the second day on Tuesday near the District Collectorate, demanding that officials solve the temple lands dispute in their village.

More than 100 Dalits, mostly women continued their agitation. The agitators cooked food near the Collectorate on Tuesday also and ate under the tents. Some women came with little children and continued the agitation even in the rain. These Dalits used to cultivate 28 acres of land belonging to Sri Kasi Visweswara Swamy temple near Tumadu for 13 years.

The temple committee management five months ago conducted open auction and handed over the rights to Dalits, who won the auction and agreed to pay Rs.2.8 lakh per annum as rent. Owing to various reasons they could not pay the same. As a result, the auction was cancelled.

Officials re-conducted auction and gave rights of the land to upper caste people. Later, the Dalits of Tumadu village began an agitation saying that it was unfair to give rights to upper caste people.The Collector Ms B Udaya Lakshmi and Kondepi MLA Mr Potula Ramarao held talks with both sides and tried to find a solution.

Mr A Malyadri, secretary Kula Vivaksha Vyatireka Porata Samithi and Mr Kankanala Anjaneyulu said that they would continue thee stir till Wednesday, adding that the Collector had assured to hold talks that day.
