Corporate Bureau New Delhi, July 27 The balance sheets of Indian companies will from now on disclose another vital statistic: the number of scheduled caste/scheduled tribe employees hired during a year. In a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday evening, the CII-Assocham committee on affirmative action promised a host of other sweeteners like mentoring 100 SC/ST entrepreneurs a year, 50,000 scholarships in reputed institutes of higher learning and special coaching to save India Inc from a job quota being rammed down its throat. Singh, on his part, assured the government would not introduce a legislation, as threatened by social justice and empowerment minister Meira Kumar. She was not averse to a law on job reservation and had even openly spoken in favour of bringing about a legislation. The committee, headed by JJ Irani, later met Kumar, too, and apprised her of India Inc's plans for the backward classes. It is scheduled to release its report in Chennai on Friday. With Singh assuring India Inc there would be no law on job quota, the committee, too, has dropped its demand for a separate judicial commission and a separate law to make discrimination at work place based on reservation punishable. The task force wanted these to be set up on the lines of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of the US. Sources said, CII and Assocham would set up another committee to chalk out a detailed code of affirmative action for companies to follow.
