Forum expresses concern over plight of Dalits

Staff Correspondent

BHADRAVATI: The Reservation Agitation Forum has expressed concern over the
Dalits and backward classes becoming weaker since their opposition to the
reservation policy.

Participating in a seminar conducted by the forum recently, leaders of Dalits
and backward classes observed that Dalits have become weaker owing to communal
politics. It is unfortunate that private multinational companies were opposing
the reservation they said and stressed the need to create awareness. They said
that a discussion would be held on July 30 at Partrika Bhavan in old town where
intellectuals like R. Manasaiah, T. Manjunath, D.C. Mayanna and others will
participate.

Plea

The local Advocates' Association has urged that steps should be taken for a
speedy settlement of problems faced by them.

Relocation of tribal families sparks row in Kodagu

Staff Correspondent

MLAs seek action against forest official

  _____

 Officials have shown scant respect for the zilla panchayat resolution not to
relocate the tribal people

 Meeting in Bangalore on August 7 to discuss the issue

 Plea to take up issue of tree rights at the meeting

  _____

Madikeri: The shifting of tribal families from Madenur-Begur settlement in
Virajpet taluk of Kodagu to Veeranahosalli in Hunsur on Saturday, was taken up
at a review meeting presided over by district in-charge Minister, Ramachandra
Gowda here on Monday.

K.G. Bopaiah, H. D. Basavaraj and B.A. Jivijaya, MLAs from Madikeri, Virajpet
and Somwarpet respectively wanted disciplinary action initiated against the
Forest department official concerned.

Mr. Bopaiah opposed Mr. Gowda's proposal to send a delegation to the
Government. He demanded immediate action against the forest official concerned.

Mr. Basavaraj asked how tribals could be shifted from Virajpet, his
constituency, without his knowledge. Forest officials had shown scant respect
for the zilla panchayat resolution not to relocate the tribal people, he
alleged.

Considering the stance of the MLAs, Mr. Gowda said he would convene a
high-level meeting of those concerned, including MLAs, Revenue and Forest
secretaries, and Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu, in Bangalore on August 7. He
said he would invite Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister
B.S. Yediyurappa to the meeting.

Mr. Jivijaya said that a decision on the issue of tree rights too would be
taken in the Bangalore meeting. The issue pertained to the Revenue department
and not the Forest department, he said.

Suspension sought

Mr. Basavaraj and Mr. Jivijaya sought immediate suspension of Forest officials
involved in the relocation of tribals. The officials were working in favour of
pseudo-environmentalists for obvious reasons, they alleged. Steps should be
taken to book atrocity cases against them, Mr. Basavaraj said. Mr. Bopaiah
alleged that the tribals were physically and mentally harassed by the
officials.

When a Forest official from Hunsur tried to clarify that the department was
only implementing the High Court order by shifting tribals in a phased manner,
Mr. Bopaiah asked who had filed the applications before the court to do so. Was
it a move to please non-governmental organisations, which are securing foreign
funds in the garb of forest and wildlife conservation? he asked.

Mr. Gowda asked whether the Forest department could resort to such relocation
overnight. Mr. Basavaraj reacted angrily when the official said that tribals
were shifted to Hunsur as land was not available in Kodagu.

Mr. Jivijaya sought to know the exact extent of Class C & D land (partially
degraded forests) in Kodagu.

Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav told him that 36,000 hectares of the land were
available in the district.
