NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 25: A majority of SC/ST students at the All India
Institute of Medical Sciences, the country’s premier medical school which was
at the heart of anti-quota protests recently, live in clusters in the college
hostel as they feel ‘‘safe and comfortable’’.

Though they were allotted rooms randomly when they first joined the college,
SC/ST students have sought reallocation to specific sections of the hostel
after some of them alleged that they were harassed by ‘general category`
students.

Hostel records, obtained by The Indian Express under the Right to Information
Act reveal that of the 45 male SC/ST students who have been in AIIMS for more
than a year, at least 34 are living in clusters. Of these, 23 have sought
reallocation from rooms which they were originally allotted when they joined
the college, the records show. Of the total 306 students in AIIMS, 65 (21%)
belong to SC/ST category.

SC/ST students living in the clusters claim that while some moved to the
clusters voluntarily as they felt ‘‘safe and comfortable’’, many were forced to
leave the rooms allotted to them as they were unable to bear harassment by some
‘upper caste’ tudents.

Hostel superintendent Dr G K Rath refused to comment, saying he was not
authorised to speak to the press. Boys’ hostel secretary Tarique Zaman said
that “Dalit students move not because they are forced to, but because they want
to live with their friends”.

AIIMS spokesperson Dr Shakti Gupta maintained “there is no caste-based
iscrimination. Many students sought reallocation of rooms due to problems of
water seepage and other maintenance problems in the rooms”.

Collectors directed to pay attention to address issue

 Renewal of district-level monitoring panels sought

 Recommendations of national panel on atrocities at all police stations

MAHABUBNAGAR: State Commissioner of Social Welfare R.M.Gonela said that
untouchability and atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes had
become a great problem for society and could be rooted out only through
vigorous awareness campaigns.

He was addressing a seminar on "Implementation of SC/ST Act" conducted jointly
by the National Dalit Forum and District Social Welfare Department. He said
Justice Punnaiah's formula consisting of 41 recommendations would also play a
key role in eradicating the menace. Mr.Gonela said the district collectors had
been directed to pay proper attention on the subject.

Nabha, September 25

Over 100 workers of the Dalit Bhalai Federation and the SC/BC Employees
Organisation yesterday gheraoed Sadar police station for one hour for not
taking action against the persons who encroached upon the cremation ground land
at Ageta village, 10 km from here. They raised slogans against the police and
the local administration.

While addressing the agitators, Mr Kulwant Atwal, president, Dalit Bhalai
Federation, said the residents of Ageta village got 8 bighas of the cremation
ground land marked from the SDM, Nabha, many months ago. He added that a
resident of the village, Kulwant Singh, removed the demarcation, and encroached
upon the land. He added that villagers visited the police station a number of
times but ASI Tilak Raj never listened to their woes. He said they were left
with no option but to agitate in front of police station.
