TIRUVANNAMALAI: Death of an 18-year-old Dalit youth, who was admitted to the
Chennai GH, triggered violence here on Saturday. The villagers thronged the
road and blocked traffic for a while, which was later cleared by the police.

Sridhar of Thandarampattu sustained injuries in a cricket-related clash on
Kaanum Pongal day. The cricket match was held at Devaradiyarkuppam village
near Thandarampattu.

Difference of opinion between two teams led by Dhanasekaran and Jayaraman
resulted a clash in which 10 persons were injured. They were admitted to the
Tiruvannamalai GH, while Sridhar, who was grievously injured, was referred
to the Chennai GH.

Both the parties had filed complaints with Thanipadi police. The police have
arrested as many as nine persons in connection with the clash.

The desecration of a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar spawned unrest on the
Helimandi-Pataudi Road in Gurgaon on Sunday. Over 100 Dalit activists
disrupted the traffic movement on the road for nearly two hours, protesting
the vandalisation of Ambedkar's statute by unknown miscreants.

Tension erupted in Helimandi, 35 km from Gurgaon city, on Sunday morning,
when hundreds of Dalits gathered around the desecrated statue. According to
the Gurgaon administration, it was a mischievous act by some vagabonds to
foment trouble. The police also claimed to have recovered empty water
bottles and some snacks from near the statue. The police have registered a
case under sections 153A (for attempting to cause riot), 427 (causing loss)
and 448 (trespassing) of the IPC against unknown miscreants.

Led by various Dalit organisations, protesters shouted slogans against the
administration and demanded immediate action against the miscreants.

Satya P Jaravata, president of Haryana's Lord Budha Club, alleged that the
desecration was part of a conspiracy. "Some people with vested interests did
it deliberately after a boundary wall was erected around this statue,"
Jravata claimed.

Had alleged that the college staff had made casteist remarks against him

NEW DELHI: Prakash Chandra, a M.A. final year student of Delhi University's
Delhi School of Social Work (DSSW) who had alleged that the college staff
had made casteist remarks against him, has been found to be at "fault" by an
inquiry committee. "The report has said that the allegations were unfounded.
The boy has been misbehaving with the hostel staff and his behaviour was
found to be unpredictable," said Delhi University Proctor Gurmeet Singh over
the weekend.

However, Prof. Singh added that since certain quarters were dissatisfied
with the report, the University would conduct another inquiry to ascertain
the facts of the case.

The Proctor had set up an inquiry committee to look into the issue after the
Dalit student complained that the staff made derogatory remarks against his
caste.

Apparently Prakash has not been in good terms with the Head of the
Department of Social Work, Sneh Lata Tandon -- also Provost of the DSSW
hostel -- after the warden and other staff submitted written complaints
against him. "Prof. Tandon asked me to vacate my room saying that she had
received complaints that I play loud music and use abusive language. I do
not even have a music system. How can I play music? She accused me of
misbehaving with the staff, while the fact is that it's the other way
round," claimed Prakash.

The DSSW students and faculty members have rallied behind Prakash in the
case claiming that the complaints were "untrue". However, the issue was
sorted out on Friday when Prof. Tandon allowed Prakash to avail himself of
the hostel facilities but only till the time the new inquiry committee
submits its report.

"The new committee will not only investigate the caste remarks but also the
issue of indiscipline. I have given Prakash admission till that time but
only on the condition that he mends his ways as I have been getting repeated
complaints against him," she said.

Prof. Tandon also criticised the faculty members for "mixing" the hostel and
the Department issues, stating that in her capacity as the Provost she did
not need to consult them for handling Prakash's case as it was not an
academic issue.
