Subject: Indian Young Publisher of the Year Award for Navayana

Dear friends and supporters of Navayana

I am delighted to share with you the news that I have won the Indian Young
Publisher of the Year Award for 2007 organised by the British Council. This
is primarily an award for Navayana's vision and unique focus on caste; and
this award in earnest belongs as much to my dear friend and Navayana's
co-publisher Ravikumar. After all, Navayana <http://www.navayana.org> was
his idea (and he was not below 35 years to compete for the award!). I am
attaching below the details of the award: the press release, the citation
and a picture.

Briefly, the award entails a trip to London in April, in time for the London
Book Fair, where I shall get to compete with 8 other publishers for the
International Young Publisher of the Year Award. (Ravikumar is also planing
to accompany me on the trip.) Winning the international award shall amount
to a purse of 7500 pounds; but irrespective, the exposure will be very
useful.

Winning the award was significant for me since the 11 publishers
short-listed for the presentation and interviews at Kolkata included senior
editors and publishers from MNCs like HarperCollins, Penguin and Pearson
among others. (Click here for details.) This award I think is therefore also
a recognition for independent publishing in India, especially for members of
the Independent Publishers Distribution Alternatives, an outfit floated by
Tulika in Chennai and Delhi, LeftWord, Samya/Stree, Samskriti, Women
Unlimited and Three Essays Press besides Navayana.

Thank you once again and looking forward to your continued support

best
Anand

Text of citation:

S. Anand, Winner of the Indian Young Publisher of the Year Award 2007

"The judges were clearly and unanimously impressed by his ability to act
quickly and effectively on ideas for books gleaned from everyday life in
India. A lateral thinker who entered publishing after perceiving a gap in
the market, he views English as a link language to reach the widest possible
readership for issues he is convinced are important.

He believes in what he does. He is doing something that matters, something
that is necessary for a society that wants to grow as a modern democracy."

Judges:
Susanna Nicklin , Director of Literature, British Council, Shona McCarthy,
NESTA Fellow and cultural affairs consultant, Prof Swapan Chakravorty, Head
of English, Jadavpur University, Derick Dsa, Editor, Times of India, Mumbai,
and Sujata Sen, Director, British Council, East India.
