BHUBANESWAR: Minister for Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste
Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Chaitanya Prasad
Majhi on Tuesday said there is no question of the State Government
reducing the reservation for STs and SCs in educational institutions
and public services.

In a statement released here, Majhi said as per the reservation policy
of the State Government, reservation for STs and SCs in posts and
services are 16.25 and 22.5 percent respectively.

The reservation is based on their percentage of population in Orissa.
The reservation percentage tots up to 38.75.

Majhi said the State Government extended 27 percent reservation in
posts and services to OBCs in 1994 keeping in view the Centre's
policy. However, the Supreme Court in October 2006 observed that
reservation in posts and services cannot cross 50 percent. The issue
of reservation for OBCs is pending in different courts, the Minister
said.
