NSA, Goonda Act to be invoked against mafia types: Mayawati

The BSP government in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday cracked its whip on
mafia-politicians of the previous Samajwadi Party regime, invoking NSA
and Gangster's Act against them and said it would brook no
interference.

Addressing a meeting of senior officials in Lucknow, Chief Minister
Mayawati also directed them to go slow on petty crime by adopting a
"reformative approach" and to concentrate on high-profile criminals
and white collar crime.

"While petty criminals crowd jails, the big fish escape," Cabinet
Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told reporters after the meeting.
Mayawati cautioned officials against misusing the SC/ST (prevention of
atrocities) Act.

"Sometimes people register cases to take revenge by misusing the SC/ST
Act," Singh quoted Mayawati as saying. She directed it must be used in
only in cases of murder and rape.

She directed the officials to slap National Security Act, Goonda Act
and Gangster's Act on mafia elements which manage to evade law through
legal jugglary.

She said "no interference, political or otherwise" would be brooked in
dealing with mafia elements and assured honest and competent officers
of full government patronage.

The chief minister directed proper representation of all sections of
society should be ensured while appointing SHOs at police stations.
Her directives come a day after hinting that more cases involving
high-profile people would be handed over to the CBI.
