St Stephen's arrests northward swing of cut-offs

Marginal increase for some courses, unchanged in many others

Pallavi Singh

New Delhi, June 15: THERE is good news for students hoping to get into
the prestigious St Stephen's College. The college's first cut-off,
released on Friday, saw a marginal increase of 1-2 per cent in a few
courses. But cut-off marks for many courses remain the same as last
year.

While the college's cut-offs may effect a corresponding increase in
cut-offs of other Delhi University colleges, (there is relief for
aspirants for most sought-after courses in Arts — like English and
History — as cut-offs in these subjects remain the same as last year.

"Many more students have applied this year. With schools marking
students so generously, cut-offs have remained the same, as opposed to
the increase that most expected," said Dr Ashutosh Dayal Mathur, the
college's convener for admissions.

The cut-offs are the same as last year for even sought-after Science
courses like Chemistry and Physics: 85 and 91 per cent respectively.

But prospects for students from Arts stream have got a little tougher
as the best-of-four percentage required in courses like Economics,
History, and Mathematics has gone up. Economics and History meanwhile
saw an increase of 1 to 2 per cent, depending on a student's stream.
For instance, there is an increase of 2 per cent for Art students
applying for Economics, and 1 per cent for Science students.

In English, the cut-off is up by 1 per cent for Science and Commerce
students, while it remains unchanged for Arts students. History has
seen an increase of 1 per cent for students from Arts stream.

Philosophy may be called the surprise of the pack, with cut-offs
dropping by as much as 9 per cent for Commerce stream and 5 percent
for Arts. For Science students, the cut-offs are down by just one
percent, though. "We have normally seen that if you call people with
very high percentages for Philosophy, many leave midway through the
course," Mathur said. "To widen the net and invite more genuine
students we have thus kept the cut-offs much lower than last year."

Meanwhile, there is a relaxation of 15 per cent for students coming
from SC/ST and Christian communities in courses like Sanskrit,
Economics, History, English, Philosophy, and BA Programme. For courses
like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and BSc programme, SC/ST
students will be given a relaxation of 15 percent; Christian students
get a relaxation of 20 percent.

In Physics, Christian students will get a relaxation of 25 per cent.
