R. Sundaram

ERODE: Statues of E.V.Ramasamy Naicker, popularly known as periyar and
C.N. Annadurai, popularly called as Anna will be moved to a spacious
and safer place inside the Paneerselvam Park here.

Periyar's life-size statue was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister
M. Karunanidhi in his presence at the Paneerselvam Park five road
junction. Near it, a statue of Anna too was placed later. Periyar
statue was installed on September 17, 1971 on his birthday and Anna
statue on February 20, 1971.Traffic on the road has been affected by
these statues as on all occasions all the Dravidian parties garland
them. Besides, political parties and others have placed various boards
around the statues, almost making them invisible.

The Municipal Council headed by K. Kumar Murugesh has stopped the
leasing out of the park for parking vehicles. He said the park would
be developed at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh.

Since both the statues of respected leaders were placed at vulnerable
points there was the possibility of some vehicles hitting them. To
avoid it, they would be moved inside the park, he said.

An all-party meeting would be convened soon to discuss the issue, he
added. Arrangements would be made to garland the statues.
