THERE is good news for applicants who have registered themselves under
SC/ST categories at Delhi University this year for undergraduate
admissions.

In a notification issued on Friday, DU has asked all colleges to admit
SC/ST candidates under the General category if they meet the cut-off
marks. Earlier, students registered under the SC/ST category could not
apply under the General category even if they met the cut-offs.

This decision comes as a special arrangement to facilitate the SC/ST
candidates in DU colleges in case they do not get admitted under the
SC/ST category.

This year, around 9,000 students from the reserved category have
applied under the SC/ST category for 7,484 seats across varsity
colleges.

"Earlier, students under the reserved category missed out on admission
in courses of their choice either due to a great rush in them or due
to certain wrong decisions. But now they can get admission in courses
of their choice even after the seats under their category gets
filled," said Suman K Verma, Joint Dean of Students' Welfare (DSW) at
Dehi University. "Moreover, this migration will not hinder the
benefits granted to them under the reserved category."

So far, about 4,000 seats under the SC category have been filled at
Delhi University.
