CHENNAI: India cannot become a nation in the true sense of the term
till untouchability and caste system remained in the society, said
Balachandar Mungakar, Member, Planning Commission, Government of
India.

He was participating in the inauguration of a two-day national seminar
organised by Dr Ambedkar Centre For Economic Studies, University of
Madras, on 'Relevance of Buddhism in the Contemporary World' held on
October 12 and 13.

According to a press release here, Balachandar stressed the relevance
of Buddhism in the contemporary world. He dealt in detail about
socio-economic inequality in Indian society.

President of the Dravidar Kazhagam K Veeramani stated that as Thanthai
Periyar and Babasaheb Ambedkar were the two sides of the same coin, it
was pertinent that the followers of Periyar followed Ambedkar.

After the inaugural session, the first technical session was held in
which six research papers were presented by scholars from different
parts of the country.

The second and third technical sessions were held on October 13.

The seminar ended with a conclusion that Buddhism was relevant in
contemporary India to resolve various burning issues, including
casteism.
