`Irregular loan recovery has made SC/ST families bankrupt`

Kannur, Oct 18: Various dalit organisations on Thursday alleged that
"large scale irregularities" in the recovery of vehicle loans
disbursed by Kerala state SC/ST corporation under self employment
scheme have driven hundreds of dalit families to bankruptcy.

As the dalit families were facing threat of auction of their immovable
properties, the corporation should suspend its recovery operations
till a "comprehensive enquiry" was held into the "murky affair",
leaders of the organisations said.

They also sought a vigilance probe and audit by comptroller and
auditor general into the scheme.

The corporation was conniving with "vested interests" to facilitate
auction of the defaulters' vehicles and was also taking possession of
landed property to recover outstanding amount, Rashtriya Mahasabha
General Secretary M Geethananandan said.

The corporation was arranging the auction even without intimating the
participating bank, which provides part of the loan amount. The scheme
has driven most of the beneficiaries to the brink of bankruptcy, he
said.

About 3,000 families have taken vehicle loans under the scheme, the
dalit leaders said.
