Ambedkar Maidan gates demolished

LUCKNOW: In clear violation of high court's order restraining the
state government from bulldozing government properties, Mayawati
government pulled down entrance gates of Ambedkar maidan, now
rechristened as Kanshi Ram Smarak, at Jail road late on Saturday
night.

On November 6, a division bench, comprising Justice AN Verma and
Justice SN Shukla, while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL)
filed by one Mithilesh Kumar Singh, had ordered the state government
to maintain status quo on government properties in the state capital.
It was clarified in the order that the government could carry out
maintenance work in state properties.

Notwithstanding the high court order, as many as half-a-dozen
bulldozers were pressed into service by the state government to pull
down three gates constructed at the park. The ground was, in fact,
covered with tin sheets from all sides to keep the demolition work
away from the public glare.

That the demolition was carried out late in the evening only
corroborated the fact. The gate on the jail road was pulled down with
the help of two bulldozers. The area reverberated as the JCB machines
trundled their way to hit the gates with iron buckets. The fall of
huge red sand stones only added to the noise. It was at that time that
a group of contractors stopped the TOI team from covering the event
