Kandhamal rioters torch 8 houses in Boudh

Bhubaneswar, October 9 Even as riot-scarred Kandhamal district is
slowly heading towards normalcy, violence flared up in neighbouring
Boudh district on Wednesday night when a group of tribals from
Gochhapada area in Kandhamal entered Lamsaripali village under
Kantamal police station area of Boudh and set fire to about eight
houses. No casualties have been reported.
However, police officials claim that this incident was not an outcome
of communal tensions. According to Deputy Inspector General of Police
R P Koche, Kondh tribals from Kandhamal had torched the houses of
Dalits because of past enmity.

Incidentally, communal clashes broke out in this area of Boudh last
week when over 100 houses, mostly belonging to Pano Christians, were
set on fire by tribals. The situation had been brought under control
since then and no further incidents were reported until Wednesday
night.

IGP Koche added that police movement to the area was affected, as the
attackers had blocked roads by felling trees, but some of the
arsonists have been arrested. Additional security personnel, including
one company of CRPF jawans and three platoons of the Orissa State
Armed Police have been deployed in the area.

Picking up the pieces
•Even as Kandhamal remains peaceful, the biggest challenge before the
administration is to ensure that the people in the relief camps return
home, say officials. Out of about 23,000 people who had sought refuge
in the camps, around 15,000 still remain.

• The CID team probing the Laxmanananda murder has sought extension of
the remand of three tribal Christians accused of being involved in the
crime. The three, Duryodhan Sunamajhi, Sanatan Badamajhi and Munda
Badamajhi, have admitted to their role in the murder and are
disclosing the names of other conspirators, said a CID official.

• The Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Diocese Raphael Cheenath told
The Indian Express that the nun who was allegedly raped during the
Kandhamal riots is not in Delhi. He added that the 29-year-old does
not want to surface anytime soon as she has lost all faith in the
police.
