Upper castes 'beat up' Dalits at Nathpur Statesman News Service BHUBANESWAR, Oct. 12: Tension gripped Nathpur village, on the outskirts of the capital city with members of five Dalit families allegedly beaten up by some upper caste members for their reported refusal to carry out the latter's orders, recently. Sources said members of the two castes have been at conflict with each other for last three years after the Dalit families stopped their traditional duty of inviting the upper caste people to attend the community meetings every Sunday. The Dalit people were carrying out the duty free of charge and their refusal to continue the practice had angered the other caste men. The Dalit families, since then, had reportedly been ostracised as a punishment. It is learnt that the recent altercation took place when the Dalits were attempting to cut a tree they had planted and the upper caste members objected to it. An FIR regarding the case was registered in the Lingaraj police station and investigations are on in this matter, police sources said.
