Maya to hold maha rally in Rae Bareli Alka Pande Posted: Oct 16, 2008 at 0012 hrs Lucknow, October 15 To counter Congress president Sonia Gandhi's road show in her constituency Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati will hold a maha rally in the city. Making this announcement on Wednesday, Mayawati came up with an eight-page explanation clarifying why her government withdrew the land which it had given four months ago for Centre's project of a rail coach factory in Rae Bareli. She also asked her Principal Secretary Net Ram to conduct an inquiry into the issue and submit the report in three days. "Based on the report, the matter will be placed before the state Cabinet for a decision," said the Bahujan Samjawadi Party (BSP) president, addressing a hurriedly-called press conference at her residence. Mayawati blamed not only Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi but also Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for limiting their development activities to Rae Bareli, Amethi and Saifai, neglecting the rest of the state. "Why a factory in Rae Bareli, when so many factories already exist in the area? Why not a factory in Bundelkhand or in the eastern UP? If the Centre plans some projects for these areas, the BSP government will readily give land," she added. The chief minister termed Congress chief's interaction with farmers in Rae Bareli a political gimmick. Pointing at two projects of Railways proposed in 2006 in Rae Bareli and Lalu Prasad Yadav's constituency Chhapra, the BSP chief said: "While the work started long ago in Chhapra, in Rae Bareli, the Congress wanted to go for bhumi pujan now, just before the Lok Sabha elections to garner votes." She added: "Rae Bareli has 20 factories, of which nine are operational and 11 have been closed down, leading to a waste of 92 acres of land. In Amethi, 16 factories were put up, of which nine are running, seven have been shut down and 862 acres of land has gone waste." She asked: "How many people received jobs from these factories? The coach factory would have given employment to mere four to five thousand people." Denying allegations of Congress leaders, who blamed the BSP for taking up a political battle at the cost of development, the CM said: "It is the Congress that has always adopted a step-motherly treatment for the state and caused impediments to developmental schemes." She also mentioned proposals of various projects pending with the Centre, including her demand of Rs 80,000 crore special package for the state. Reacting to Sonia Gandhi's statement — 'who can stop me from coming to my home', Mayawati said, "My government did not restrict the entry of anyone anywhere in the state. If I had to stop them, I would not have let them enter my home town Badalpur and organise a rally." She added, "My government would have easily prevented the Congress chief from entering Rae Bareli and would not have let her hold a road show in the area." ------------------------------------ ---- INFORMATION OVERLOAD?
