Govt non-committal in admitting SC/ST students: Par panel NEW DELHI, OCT 23 (PTI) A parliamentary panel has observed that the government is "non-committal and evasive" in admitting reserved category students in certain courses offered by AIIMS. Unsatisfied with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reply in connection with its recommendation, the committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes headed by Ratilal Kalidas Varma has asked it to review the existing system of counselling in AIIMS to accommodate more reserved category students in certain courses without delay. "Shortfall persisted in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) with respect to intake of SCs and STs in their admission to certain courses," the committee observed. "The responsibility for any laxity in the non-filling of the reservation quota may also be fixed and the action taken in such cases should be reported to it," the panel said. As per the prescribed admission policy in AIIMS, 15 per cent and 7.5 per cent undergraduate and postgraduate seats are reserved for SC and ST respectively. The committee pointed out the shortfall in the intake of SC/ST students in MSc/MBiotechnology/MSc(Nursing) during the period of 2001 to 2004, in MD/MS/MDS courses during 2002 and 2003 and in BSc (Hons) certificate course in 2004. It recommended that the AIIMS should increase the seats in popular PG discipline so that more SC/ST candidates could be inducted.
