More room for SC, ST at ISM

AMIT GUPTA
Ranchi, Nov. 3: In a bid to encourage more SC and ST students to take
admission, the Indian School of Mines (ISM) University, Dhanbad, has
decided to admit a greater number of special category students during
its JEE-2009 admissions.

The Telegraph had earlier reported that 149 seats had remained vacant
after the 2008 admissions. Thus, to combat the shortfall, Professor M.
Javed, the chairman of the Ismu JEE-2009 admissions, said that next
year 55 more seats in the SC category and 13 more seats in the ST
group would be offered — not including the usual number of reserved
seats.

"A total of 128 seats have been reserved for SC students for 2009, but
we would offer 183 seats. The 55 extra seats that were not filled in
2008 would be up on offer next year. For ST students a total of 65
seats have been reserved for 2009, the institute would offer 78 extra
vacancies, 13 of it being carried over from 2008," Javed explained.

Seats would be available for five-year integrated and dual degree
programmes for BTech and MTech courses.

Javed also expects to see more ST and SC students in 2009, as the
institute has decided to relax the basic mark criteria for the
students. "We expect to see more special category students in
preparatory courses, if not in regular courses," Javed hoped.

This year the number of reserved seats in the OBC category would also
swell with the institute increasing phase-wise implementation of an
increased quota system to 18 per cent. Last year for the first phase
of the quota implementation, a total of nine per cent seats were
reserved for the OBC category.

By 2010, which is the deadline for the implementation of the 27 per
cent reservation, total number of SC and ST seats would increase
considerably, while general category seats would remain static.

Ultimately, 27 per cent seats would be reserved for OBC, 15 per cent
for SC and 7.5 per cent for ST, thus a total of 49.5 per cent seats
would be reserved, while 50.5 per cent seats would be of merit
category. For 2009 session, Ismu has decided to lower cut off mark by
10 per cent for SC and ST students.

So, if the earlier cut off was 60 per cent of the cut off fixed for
general aspirants, it would be 50 per cent of that from next year.
Moreover, admissions to the Ismu preparatory course, would also be
made simpler.

According to ISMU rules, SC and ST aspirants with 50 per cent of their
category's cut-off would be allowed to take up the one-year
preparatory course.

Earlier, the criterion was 50 per cent of the marks received by a
general category student.
